PNG is lossless, so the quality slider has no effect on it. WebP usually gives the smallest file at the same visible quality.
Why image size matters more than people think
A page that takes four seconds to appear loses a good share of its visitors before they have read a word, and oversized images are usually the reason. A photo straight off a phone is commonly three to six megabytes; the same picture on a web page rarely needs to be more than two hundred kilobytes. That difference is almost entirely invisible to the eye and very visible in the loading bar.
Compression works by discarding detail your eye was never going to notice — fine gradations in areas of similar colour, mostly. At a quality setting of 75 to 85 the result is usually indistinguishable from the original at normal viewing size, while the file is a fraction of the weight. Below about 60 you start to see blocky patches in skies and shadows.
Common questions
Will compressing an image make it look worse?
At sensible settings, not noticeably. The default here is deliberately conservative. If you are unsure, compress a copy and compare the two side by side at the size you will actually display them — not zoomed to 400%, where any compression looks bad.
Why did my file get bigger instead of smaller?
Because it was already well compressed, and re-encoding an already-compressed image adds overhead without removing anything. This tool checks for that and hands back your original untouched rather than a worse version of it. Converting to WebP will usually still save space where a re-encode cannot.
Should I use JPEG, PNG or WebP?
JPEG for photographs. PNG for logos, screenshots and anything with sharp edges or transparency. WebP for almost everything on a modern website — it handles both cases and is typically 25 to 35 per cent smaller than JPEG at the same visual quality. Every current browser supports it.
Is there a file size or daily limit?
No. There is no upload, no queue and no account, so there is nothing for us to meter. The practical limit is your own device’s memory, which on a normal computer means you can process dozens of large photos in one go.
