Choosing the right image format

Most format problems come down to one of three things: a site that will not accept the file you have, transparency that disappears when you save, or a picture that is far larger than it needs to be. All three are format choices rather than quality problems.

JPEG is a photographic format and has no concept of transparency, so any transparent area becomes solid white when you convert to it. PNG keeps every pixel exactly as it was, including transparency, which makes it right for logos and screenshots and wrong for photographs — a PNG photo is often five times the size of the equivalent JPEG. WebP does both jobs and is smaller than either, which is why it has become the sensible default for the web.

Common questions

Why has my transparent background turned white?

You converted to JPEG, which cannot store transparency. Convert to PNG or WebP instead and the transparent areas will survive.

Is WebP safe to use on a live website?

Yes. Every browser released in the last several years supports it, including Safari, Edge and all mobile browsers. The main place you still meet trouble is older desktop software and some marketplace upload forms, which is exactly when you would convert back to JPEG or PNG.

Does converting lose quality?

Converting to PNG never loses anything, because PNG is lossless. Converting to JPEG or WebP re-encodes the picture, which loses a little — usually invisibly at the default quality. Converting repeatedly between lossy formats does accumulate damage, so work from your original rather than from a previous conversion where you can.

Can I convert several images at once?

Yes. Add as many as you like, convert them all with the same settings and take them as a single ZIP.
