What to remove

Recommended. The colour profile is not personal information, and removing it can make colours look washed out or over-saturated on some screens.

Everything else goes: camera make and model, serial numbers, lens, exposure settings, dates, GPS position, editing software, author and copyright fields, embedded thumbnails, XMP and IPTC records, and any comments.

The picture itself is not touched. We rebuild the file around the original compressed image data rather than re-encoding it, so cleaning a photo costs you no quality at all. The cleaned file is usually a few kilobytes smaller and pixel-for-pixel identical.

What your photographs are quietly telling people

Almost every photograph taken on a phone or a modern camera carries a block of hidden data alongside the picture. At minimum that is the make and model of the device, the exact date and time, and the exposure settings. Very often it also includes the serial number of the camera body and lens, the name of whoever the device is registered to, and — if location services were on — the precise coordinates where the shutter was pressed, typically accurate to within a few metres.

None of that is visible when you look at the picture. All of it travels with the file when you email it, put it on a marketplace listing, or send it to someone you have never met. Selling a sofa with a photo taken in your living room can publish your home address to anyone who knows where to look. That is the problem this tool exists to solve.

Stripping the data here does not touch the picture. The file is rebuilt around the original compressed image rather than re-encoded, so the cleaned copy is pixel-for-pixel identical to what you started with and simply a few kilobytes lighter.

Common questions

Does removing metadata reduce image quality?

Not at all. The image data itself is copied across untouched — only the metadata blocks around it are dropped. The result is identical pixel for pixel, which is not true of tools that re-save the photograph to strip it.

Do social networks remove this data already?

The big platforms usually strip location data when you upload, but you should not rely on it. It does not help you at all when you email a photo, send it in a messaging app that preserves the original, upload it to a classifieds site, or attach it to a document — which is when it matters most.

What is the colour profile, and should I remove it?

It describes how the colours in the file should be interpreted, so that a photograph looks the same on different screens. It contains nothing personal, and removing it can make colours look washed out or oversaturated. It is kept by default for that reason, and you can untick the box if you want an absolutely minimal file.

Which file types can be cleaned?

JPEG, PNG and WebP, which covers essentially every photograph and web image you are likely to have. Camera raw files are not supported; those are best handled in the software that produced them.

Can you see my photograph or my location?

No. The file is read by your own browser and never sent anywhere. If a photo turns out to contain your home coordinates, those coordinates are displayed to you on your screen and to nobody else — there is no server involved for them to reach.
