Cropping for the place the picture is going
Most crops are dictated by where the image will end up. A profile picture wants a square. Instagram’s portrait format is 4:5. A video thumbnail or a website hero is 16:9. Printed photographs are usually 3:2, which is the shape most cameras capture natively. Cropping to the right ratio up front saves the platform doing it for you, badly, and cutting off someone’s head.
The crop here is taken from your full-resolution original rather than from the preview on screen, so working on a scaled-down view costs you nothing in quality. Whatever pixels were inside the box are exactly the pixels you get.

What aspect ratio should I use?
1:1 for profile pictures and most avatars. 4:5 for portrait social posts. 16:9 for video thumbnails, presentation slides and website banners. 3:2 for anything going to print at standard photo sizes. Choose free if you are simply cutting away something you do not want.
Does cropping reduce the image quality?
No. Cropping removes pixels from the edges; the ones that remain are untouched. The file gets smaller because there is less of it, not because anything was degraded.
Can I crop a picture to an exact pixel size?
The readout under the preview shows the exact pixel dimensions of your crop as you drag, so you can size it precisely. If you need a specific final size, crop to the right shape here and then set the exact dimensions with the resizer.
Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
No. The image is read from your device, drawn in your own browser, and the cropped copy is written on your machine. Nothing is transmitted.
